Rezum Q & A

What is benign prostatic hyperplasia?

As men age, they often experience excess growth of prostate tissue. This condition is called BPH or an enlarged prostate.

The prostate is a small gland located at the base of a man’s bladder, and the urethra passes through it. When extra prostate tissue develops, it obstructs and compresses the flow of urine from the bladder through the urethra. In severe cases, BPH can completely block the flow of urine.

Symptoms of BPH include:

  • A slow or weak urine stream
  • Difficulty starting urination
  • Disrupted flow while urinating
  • An urgent need to urinate

An increased need to urinate during the day and evening, as well as feeling that your bladder doesn’t empty with urination, are also typical symptoms.

BPH is a common condition that can negatively impact your quality of life. It affects at least 50% of men over age 50 and 90% over age 80.

 How can Rezūm treat BPH?

Rezūm is a minimally invasive treatment that uses water vapor therapy to reduce excess prostate tissue. This treatment, delivered through the urethra, targets excess prostate tissue with the thermal energy in steam.

During a Rezūm transurethral needle ablation procedure, Dr. Rahul Mehan or Dr. Harpreet Wadhwa apply radiofrequency energy to a few drops of water inside a hand-held device. That creates steam.

When the doctor injects steam into the excess tissue in your prostate, the vapor immediately turns back into water. That causes immediate damage to the cells. Once damaged, the cells die and your body naturally reabsorbs them.

Rezūm offers several benefits for treating BPH, including:

  • Safe and effective symptom relief
  • Preservation of urinary and sexual function
  • Nonsurgical treatment without general anesthesia
  • Quick recovery times and fast results

Rezūm treatment can also reduce your need for BPH medications.

What can I expect during my procedure?

Rezūm is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that doesn’t require general anesthesia. Dr. Mehan or Dr. Wadhwa typically arrange for IV sedation or a very effective prostatic block.  Patient comfort is a priority.

Your appointment takes place in the office and usually lasts only a few minutes. You might receive a recommendation for short-term catheterization, but you can resume normal activities within a few days of your Rezūm procedure.

Over the next few weeks, as your body heals and reabsorbs the dead prostate cells, you’ll notice your BPH symptoms gradually improving.
