HIFU Q & A

EVU Center

What is HIFU?

High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) uses targeted, high-frequency sound waves to kill cancer cells. This FDA-cleared, minimally invasive therapy is especially effective in treating early-stage, localized prostate cancer that hasn’t spread outside the prostate.

East Valley Urology Center is excited to offer HIFU to patients locally and throughout the country.

Drs. Mehan and Wadhwa are HIFU pioneers in Arizona. Dr. Mehan trained at Indiana University during the FDA trials and has used both Sonablate®and Ablatherm® HIFU machines. He and Dr. Wadhwa were the first to perform the HIFU procedure with the Sonablate system in Arizona.

How does HIFU treat prostate cancer?

During Sonablate HIFU therapy, your provider inserts a small probe into your rectum to deliver targeted, high-temperature sound waves to the cancer site. Unlike traditional prostate cancer treatments, such as radiation therapy and surgical prostatectomy, tissue outside of the precise target area isn’t damaged or affected.

In addition to eliminating cancer cells, HIFU therapy has several other benefits:

  • Quick recovery
  • No radiation
  • No blood loss
  • Minimally invasive

Sonablate HIFU provides an utterly customizable treatment solution that enables your doctor to adjust your procedure while it’s underway. That means they only destroy the tissue that needs to be destroyed, preserving your body’s standard functions as much as possible.

This nonsurgical, outpatient procedure preserves prostate tissue and your ability to ejaculate. It features reduced risks of incontinence and erectile dysfunction compared to surgical procedures.

What can I expect during HIFU treatment?

HIFU treatments take between one to four hours, and you won’t feel any pain during the procedure.

You have two enemas spread out over two hours before your procedure. To keep you as comfortable and still as possible, you receive light intravenous sedation and spinal anesthesia.

The Sonablate HIFU system provides live images of the prostate and surrounding tissue. This view allows for greater precision during your treatment and provides your doctor with immediate feedback on how the therapy is proceeding.

What can I expect after HIFU treatment?

After your appointment, you might feel mild discomfort, but you’re likely to leave the office without any pain. Your doctor inserts a catheter to ensure your bladder empties appropriately. The catheter is removed in approximately two to four weeks.

As you recover from your procedure, you may pass small amounts of blood and tissue with your urine. That's normal; drink plenty of fluids to flush your system.

You can return to work or other normal activities within a few days.
